Big ships plow past the Portsmouth waterfront, many of them headed to or from America's oldest shipyard, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Located in fact not in Norfolk but in Portsmouth, this shipyard has seen action since pre-Revolutionary War days - both the country's first fighting ironclad and first battleship were built here. Learn more abut this historic facility's fascinating past perusing exhibits at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Musuem, with exhibits featuring artifacts and sundry from the shipyard's inception in the 18th century all the way to the present. Be sure to visit the retired Lightship, PORTSMOUTH, nearby which now sees service as a musuem.
