Monticello

Description

Monticello was the home of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson began construction of Monticello in 1769. Due to Jefferson's constant remodeling it took more then forty years till its construction was complete.

Today it stands at three stories tall and has twenty-one rooms open for viewing. The building and architecture are beautiful and an insight into the style of his time. The house has many unique features and artifacts that were unusual at his time. Some of those things include; skylights, Native American art, fossils, and a polygraph constructed by Jefferson. By far the most interesting part of Monticello is the dependencies. It gives a rare insight into how a house of Monticello's size was run. As well as a look at how the slaves lived and worked.

Regular admission will allow you a guided tour of the second story of the house, a self-guided tour of the basement and dependencies, Mulberrry Row, the grounds, Jefferson's family graveyard which is still in use, the Griffin Discovery Room a hands-on-place for kids (also one of the few places where do-not-touch, does not apply), the Howard and Abby Milestein Theater where a movie plays every 20 minutes about Jefferson, and the Robert H. And Clarice Smith Gallery . For an extra cost you can take a tour of the third level and see the famed Dome room. A few things to keep in mind when you visit are: Do not touch, wear walking shoes because Jefferson's yard will put most yards to shame, and remember taking pictures inside Monticello is not allowed although you may take as many as you want outside and in the basement and dependencies. Ticket prices vary from season to season. From March through October adult tickets cost $24. From November through February adult tickets cost $18. Children, ages 6-11, cost $8. Monticello is open everyday except Christmas. Hours differ daily, so check the website before going. Monticello is located on 931 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, Charottesville, Virginia 22902.
