Perched above a grassy lawn and cheerful garden, the historic Hermitage house - now a museum- also overlooks a sweep of the Lafayette River, a peaceful spot popular with both cultural sight-seers and wedding parties. The house and its collection of art and artifacts, amassed by its original owners, the Sloanes, can be visited on guided tours, the grounds and associated wetlands are open to the public. Catch changing exhibits showcasing works by contemporary artists in the designated space, some of them at work as part of the artist-in-residence program in the cottage turned studios just a quick walk from the main house.
