Historic Army fort in Hampton, VA. Construction on the fort began in 1819 and was completed in 1834, and became the largest stone fort ever built in the United States. Due to the fort's role in the nation's slavery history and related events such as the civil war, Fort Monroe was designated a National Monument on November 1, 2011.
The incorporation of Fort Monroe into the National Park System is still in the planning phases.
