Description
The Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area lies at the north end of the long narrow valley that is contained within the Massanutten Mountain range in Virginia. It offers family-sized campsites, 3 group campsites, a separate picnic area, a log cabin and information center, and the ruins of a blast furnace that produced pig iron during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Short interpretive trails explain the process of iron production. Other trails lead to the ridges of Massanutten, both east and west of the campground, and to overlooks of the Shenandoah Valley and the Passage Creek gorge. Volunteer hosts provide information. The family-sized campsites are first come, first served, but the group sites must be reserved.
