George Washington Birthplace National Monument

George Washington, America's first and greatest hero, was crucial to the establishment of the United States as a nation founded on the principles of liberty. George Washington Birthplace preserves the heart of the Washington lands and a memorial plantation. Here, in the peace and beauty of this place untouched by time, the staunch character of this national hero comes to the imagination.

Open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily year round. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Days. Visitation highest in Summer. School group visits highest from mid-April to early-June.

 Directions

George Washington Birthplace National Monument is located in the Northern Neck of Virginia, 38 miles east of Fredericksburg and is accessible via Virginia Route 3.


 Climate
 

The park experiences all four distinct seasons. Temperatures vary in the summer from the 70s to the high 90s, typically low 90s with high humidity and frequent thunderstorms. Winters vary from mild and rainy to snow and ice. Temperatures range from the 40s to the teens. Spring and fall are typically pleasant in the 50s and 60s.

 Nearby Attractions
 

The visitor center includes exhibits, film, bookstore, and restrooms. Ranger talks are offered on the hour, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Living Colonial Farm features heritage livestock and tobacco. Special events offer costumed interpreters and demonstrations.

Washington Family Burial Ground

The burial ground has a picnic area with tables, grills, pavilion and restrooms and a one mile loop Nature Trail accessed at the picnic area.

The Potomac River beach offers view of the river and Maryland, walking, sunbathing, and fishing; however swimming is not allowed.
