Additional Details

The Bolar Flat boat launch is open year-round. However, unusually high or low water levels can impede boat launching. Night fishing is permitted if boats are equipped with required lighting. Gas, limited groceries and camping items, boat and boat slip rentals, ice, bait, fishing tackle, trailer parking and storage, and battery charging are available at the Bolar Flat camp store and marina

A beach and picnic area are located between Campground 1 and Campground 2. All day-use facilities have flush toilets. Hot showers are available at the beach house. A volleyball net and horseshoe pit are near the beach picnic area. Volleyballs and horseshoes are available at the fee both for a returnable deposit.

Hike and enjoy the scenery on 10 miles of maintained trails. Twin Islands Overlook and Grouse Point Overlook offer spectacular views of the lake. All trails are for foot travel only. Trail maps are available at the entrance station from your campground host.

Hunting is permitted in the lake area with the following considerations. The discharging or uncasing of firearms is permitted only during an open game season and is not allowed around the developed recreation areas. No hunting is permitted between the road and the lake. A national forest stamp is required for hunting at Lake Moomaw. Obtain a copy of the current Virginia hunting regulations for additional information.

Sites are available on a first come, first served basis – no reservations. These camps offer hot showers and flush toilets. Water hydrants are located throughout and a washing sink is behind each bathhouse. Sites must be occupied the first night and cannot be left unattended for more than 24 hours thereafter. Each site is limited to two vehicles, three camping units, and eight people. All vehicles and camping units must be entirely on gravel or tent pad. Check with your campground host for overflow parking areas. Fees: $16 per night for sites with no electricity; $20 per night for sites with electricity. Fees for sites with electricity include a $4 per night surcharge which is not reduced for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports. Fees include day-use areas—such as the beach and parking – for one vehicle.

Group camping areas can be reserved through the Warm Springs Ranger District Office, (540)839-2521. Three group camping areas are available, complete with grills, horseshoe pit, playing field, and fire pit. No electrical hookups are available. A hand water-pump, vault toilet, and picnic table are available at each area. Each area is $35 per night. The fee for day-use areas – such as the beach and parking – is an additional $2 per day per vehicle.
